After running a few errands this morning and heading into work for a while, I decided my daily project would be to install recessed lighting in the kitchen. We are getting ready for our kitchen update (cabinets, appliances [later than sooner], and the works) and I wanted the old track lighting we had up out of the way. I was considering new track lighting until my brother suggested just installing recessed lighting; I said “oh”. It hadn’t crossed my mind.

First, the old:

I couldn’t help but dismantling it ahead of time. I had to probe the ceiling to see what was up there. It turned out to be relatively easier than it could have been — no insulation. I picked Lowes because last night when I was having trouble getting to sleep and browsing the web I found this great “installing recessed lighting” tutorial.

The new:

My parents came in to town to help; it was much needed and much appreciated. It took my father and I a while to cut the holes (we ran into a few studs). But wiring worked out alright. Here’s the finished result — it is bright! We used Sylvania Daylight Plus Par20 lamps.
