Long time and no blog. Sad to say not much has been new or noteworthy in my life: work is going well, I am still volunteering at Harborview, I took a Host Defense to Cancer class at UW, and I have a some vacation time coming up and am planning a trip to Idaho. These things have been intermixed with some good relaxation, a new HDTV, a lot of time at the gym, and some great coffee — life is good.

I bought myself a new camera, a Canon EOS 5D. It is a bit late to jump on the scene, as the camera has been out for ~18 months with likely a replacement on the way late this year or early next… but I found a reasonable price and decided ‘why not’. I have been toying with the idea for a while, and figured this would be a good camera body to decide what I am after: speed & reach [i.e. Canon EOS 1D Mark 3] or full frame & resolution [i.e. currently, the Canon EOS 5D or Canon EOS 1Ds Mark 2]. The cool things about the 5D are extra resolution (50% more than my Canon EOS 20D, 12.7 MP vs 8.2 MP), spot-metering [yippie!], and most of all “full frame” (i.e. read more about “frame of view crop“, and in this case the lack of it; illustrated below). Anyway, I am through my first 300 images on the camera and I like it; they’re silky smooth. Check a few out on my Flickr.

Anyway, that’s about all for now. It’s Mother’s Day and I am about to head out to make my mom a nice early dinner: grilled salmon w/bell peppers, green beans, some rosemary bread, and a chocolate desert. Maybe I’ll take a picture.

Dave, I really love your work.

With the 5D being full frame, how are your lenses performing. Specifically the edge performance?

I’d love to pick up a ff body, but I really like how well my 20D works with most lenses.
